Lesson 5 - data analysis - mapping 

In this lesson we will make some cool maps using a programme called Quantum GIS (QGIS for short!). GIS simply makes maps on the computer. It works by stacking lots of layer with different information – a bit like drawing lots of pictures on tracing paper and then putting them together. QGIS is a also bit like Google maps but you can draw on it and add extra information which can be really useful.

 

QGIS is a freely available mapping program that can be downloaded to your/the school laptop. Depending on your school online security, you may have trouble downloading QGIS. I suggest that the teacher checks this ahead of time and tries to download QGIS as it can take a while.

If the teacher is feeling brave they may even do a live demo of QGIS for the students.
